Speech jamming gun shuts people up

Speech jamming gunThe speech jamming gun has got to be one of the more interesting inventions that we’ve come across recently. Created by some researchers in Japan, it is a handheld gun that can jam the words of speakers who are over 100-feet away. It works by listening in with a directional microphone, and then after a short delay of 0.2 seconds, it plays it back with a directional speaker. The reason for the slight delay? To trigger an effect called Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) which is known to interrupt people when they speak.
The gun doesn’t cause discomfort, but being unable to speak properly is quite an experience itself. The speech jamming gun could be used in libraries and quiet places to stop people from speaking, or to bring order to a chaotic debate. However, simple pair of earplugs can probably counter the effects of the gun, which brings us back to square one. For what it’s worth, it seems like an interesting gadget to play pranks with.
